It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of Steve Bean on Sunday 4th April. Steve was a Club stalwart of over 40 years. He bravely battled against cancer since diagnosis in November 2017 and, in typical Beany fashion, fought right to the very end - his fourth grandchild (third grandson) baby Ted was born last Thursday.
Steve joined WBHC in the late 70's and was a main stay of the 2nd team for many seasons at left back as well as playing for the 1st team in that period. He has carried out a number of roles within the Club which have included -
3rd team skipper for 5 seasons 91/92 to 95/96
6th team skipper for 4 seasons 00/01 to 03/04
Club President 1995
Club umpire
Steve brought an enthusiasm that was second to none to all of these roles. As a captain, he led by example both on & off the pitch, constantly encouraging - never criticising. He was instrumental in the progression of so many of our juniors up through the teams. He always made time for socialising after the game in the bar and was instantly recognisable through possessing the finest moustache ever witnessed at the Club ! He was also a highly proficient tennis player with, as you would expect, a keen interest in all sports.

His love for the game of hockey and the Club remained undiminished throughout his years of membership but this never outshone his greatest love - which was for his wife Sue & their family.

On a personal note - I first met Steve when I joined the Club in 1986. He was always there with advice and support during my years of involvement with our 1st team. His interest in how the team was performing never abated even after his retirement from playing. I will forever be in his debt for his words of wisdom and friendship.

He will be greatly missed at the Club but always remembered as a true Club man.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Sue, his son Rob and daughter Joanna.
