| Having ended last season as losing Plate Finalists the first game in the Cup this season presented a quandary; after two good years in the Plate (quarter finalists in 2010-11) maybe it was time to start taking some better scalps, or perhaps another nice run in the plate, after a heroic first round cup exit, would be good (especially considering we had lost eleven of last year’s squad). But our opposition, Lichfield, may be similarly disposed to a Plate run and there was the prospect of a contest very similar to the Olympic Badminton final group stages!
With these thoughts we travelled to Lichfield, this was our seventh successive away fixture and fortunately, again, a parent (Mr Glossop this time) was on hand to assist with transport and provide the travelling support. There was agreement that we should go out and, as the club always does, try to win. And win we did, eventually.
After a scoreless first half, during which the new team slowly began to knit together, we scored twice in the first ten minutes of the second half. First Ryan Glossop deflected in a Richard Lloyd Mills cross/shot then Richard drove powerfully into the D, brushing aside the on-rushing goalkeeper, to score. Lichfield fought back and with ten minutes left drew level but unable to force a winner, so the game went to flicks.
In Nelsonian fashion Henry Ellis reminded his fellow flick takers of their personal responsibility and that they would later regret any failure to take the contest seriously. We won 4-2, scoring all our flicks and not needing Henry to take his.
Celebrations were muted, Pandora’s box had been opened. Who would we get, perhaps a shot at Beeston? No, we have drawn Cannock, predictably, away! Match scheduled for Sunday 18th November, all support welcome.
