U12s do well at Midland Region HA championship
Our Under 12 team had an amazing day at Cannock Hockey club on Sunday 3 April.  Having qualified for the Midland Region HA championship by coming second in the local one at Beeston, we had a very big shock by nearly doing the business again.
The team has been together pretty much for three years as we started with a very young team.  Last year we came second locally but were beaten quite heavily in the regional.  The standard was very high we thought and so when we qualified this year our expectation was not high.  What a year does!  We won our opening two matches and the boys clearly started to wonder against Belper and Lichfield.  But we lost our third game after we squandered numerous chances  to Leicester. Back the team came and we won against Worcester and South Leicester to find ourselves in a very unfamiliar position of “if we win our last game we win our pool and are in the semi finals! One more match and we are in the nationals”.  Oh no – we lost 2-1 in our last game to Sutton Coldfield and found that we had come third of seven in our group as Leicester lost their last game and finished on equal points with Belper.  The kids were pretty gutted!
Having run this team for three years, I can honestly say that this was the best that I have ever seen them play.  They all played really well and like a team.  Will captained the team and led by example putting out great short corners for Ash to score from and never letting a 16 go to the opposition.  His work rate is great and he also got a goal (with an assist).  Ash got three goals and showed how good he can be at playing up front.  We had one of Will’s friends in Harvey Dolman join us who played great and ran his heart out.  He scored three vital goals (had  a fantastic cover drive go over the cross bar!) Little Ben ran tirelessly scoring one of the early goals that got us going.  Our other Harvey ran all day and terrorised the opposition.  At the back we had Dan and Charlie who did so well at keeping the opposition out for most of the games – we used to let in so many goals but they have transformed that this year well done.  Jonathan in goal made some great saves and kept is in a couple of games where all our score lines were close. Daniel came along as sub and played a couple of the games for experience when we were up, but to say that he saved us one match would not be an understatement.  Overall a great team effort and one that the Club should be proud of.
Beeston won the tournament. They were by far and away the best side there and we wish them all the best in the National finals.
Just need to sort the U14 next year!
