It was a busy Sunday

Once again, I arrived late for the ladies cup game to find them behind, this time to 2 early goals against a very strong Amersham and Chalfont side.  They were in the process of fighting back, however, when I arrived and, having gone close in open play, won a couple of penalty corners, which unfortunately came to nothing.  Amersham were very quick on the break, however, and having got back into our 25, proceded to put us under a lot of pressure, which resulted in a brilliantly deflected cross for their 3rd goal.  As well as being quick on the break, they pressed very high, making it difficult for our defenders to clear their lines and they proceded to score another 3 goals before half time.

The second half was about pride and damage limitation, and our ladies gave the big crowd soemthing to cheer as they dug deep and put in 35 minutes of solid effort and no little skill.  As they gained in confidence, they began to play the ball with increasing conviction from the back, our forward players put their defence under pressure while the defence made an increasing number of solid tackles and clearences.  In the end, we conceded one more and then, to the crowd's delight, Aimi scored from our last short with a great deflection.  It's hard to single anyone out, but I should mention Lee, who made save after save and probably had more to do in this game than in the rest of the season put together!

Not the result we wanted, but we played with great heart and emerged with pride intact, thanks to that second half.  Amersham showed us the level that we should aspire to and we wish them well in the final.

Our juniors contested the Notts championships on the same day, the boys at U10 and U12 (2 teams) levels, the girls only at U12 as we don't have an U10 goalkeeper!  They all performed with great spirit and the coaches tell me that they were all a credit to the club.  The boys U12s got through to the final, losing on penalty flicks to our local rivals and therby qualifying for the Midlands tournament, the girls also qualified after performing really well throughout their tournament.  I've included a couple of extracts from emails sent by the coaches to the parents, this sums up how the day went far better than I can.

Massive well done to all the girls.  Really proud of you all.  A couple of the Beeston girls now understand why it is better being a good club where you can get the chance of going to the regional finals!

Just a quick message to say how proud I was of all the teams who played today and how encouraging it was to see so many energetic and enthusiastic young hockey players representing our club. It was also great to have so many parents present cheering the boys on.
