The Journeys ends for Vets...

The Vets road trip came to an end in Sheffield suffering a 4 – 1 defeat to a strong Bankers team. The day started badly as only thirteen of us arrived at the meet, already without our pace players Dixon and Worsley, we would be restricted to just one sub unless desperate and the need arose for the Fat Bloke to come off the bench to keep us at 11. Bankers started strongly, pulling us all over the pitch, with our defence dropping deeper and deeper. Ward produced some good saves, there was some last ditch tackling before Bankers eventually took the lead. We then decided to push higher and support Ando, he’d been like a lone ranger up to this point. We started putting passes together, and Freegard found Ando in their D and his smart control and quick finish made it 1 – 1. We played well putting pressure on for the remainder of the first half but turned around all square. Umpiring errors in the second half lead to two Bankers goals, Middleton’s “back stick” resulting in a short, (even the oppo turned for an expected 16!) leading to Lambo getting his body behind the drag flick, penalty stroke dispatched by the big guy from the back, 2 – 1! Then the forward uses his football skills to get into the D and score for 3 – 1. We were undeterred and still trying to move the ball and support Ando up front. Their defender then plays the ice hockey type tackle falling over, advantage but no short for us and play breaks down. Ando decided to tell the umpire how wrong he was and that lead to the end of his participation, and us down by 1 player for the next 10 minutes. Turpo thought that wasn’t enough of an advantage and hits the ball away to join Ando in the naughty chair! At 11 v 9 we showed our character for the three minute overlap. Wardy continued to play well, the defence soaked up plenty of pressure before a fourth was added to finish us off with just two minutes remaining. New skipper elected for next season, good luck Mr Binder.
